Contentment

“The best way to be content is to believe that condition best which God has, in his providence, placed us in. If God had seen fit for us to have more, we would have it. His wisdom knows best. Perhaps we could not manage a great estate. It is hard to carry a full cup without spilling it. A boat may be overturned by having too great a sail.   The soul which possesses the rich treasure of contentment is like Noah in the ark – he can sing in the midst of a deluge.   Discontent is like a leak in a ship. It is not the water outside but the water which gets into a ship that sinks it. So it is not outward trouble that brings a Christian low but when a leak of discontent lets trouble get into the heart the Christian goes down. Do therefore as the sailors: pump the water out and stop this spiritual leak in thy soul and no trouble can hurt thee.”   Thomas Watson
